Nature and environment education puppet show and talk was organised at SGM Shiroiya English school with efforts from the school and the parents of the school.

A crocodile baby was rescued from Fulpada area near A.K. Road after receiving information that it has been stranded in a fisherman’s net. The aware citizens of that area informed PRAYAS Control room and the team has taken prompt action to make it safe. There were signs of dehydration as it might be out of water since long time and also as it was stuck in net, it might have got exhausted.

It was allowed to settle in the rescue center in proper equipment with fresh water and it has regained its energy level. Its raring to go back to its natural habitat. The rescue operation was carried out with the guidance of  DCF Shri Vasava and the cooperation of the aware citizens of the area. The baby has been handed over to the forest department and will be released in to a suitable habitat as soon as possible.

Prayas Control room got call of injured bird from sachin area. People were not able to identify the bird as it was new to them. Volunteers reached the spot & even they were not able to identify it. They took some photos & sent MMS back to Control room for identification of it.It was Immature Common Hawk Cuckoo we were also little confused as this bird wasn’t spotted in sachin area till now. This is the first spoting of Comon hawk cuckoo of this season. It is having a damage on wings & leg, so it is not even able to walk & take flight. Now it is under treatment.

Early morning rescue of White Breasted Waterhen from the Variyavi bazar. Prayas Control Room got call of unknown bird came in the residence on 6:30 am. When volunteer reached the spot he gave description of the bird by which we were not able to recognize the bird. we told him to send me the photo.It was White Breasted Watehen. It was taken away from that spot & released on safe spot where they are having good habitat & many Water hens are found in that area.

Prayas Team control room got call from Mahidharpura area about a cat stuck in cement block. When volunteer reached the place they were amazed to see the condition of cat. It may have happened that cat might have got scared from something & tried to run away from it but the hole in the block was too small for it to go through, so i

t got stuck. The rescue was very critical as while breaking the block, if cat may make any move it might injure cat’s neck or cat itself can get injured due to struggle.

Volunteers took quick decision, and brought chisel & hammer to make that hole bigger so that cat instead of coming inside it can directly jump outside.

Cat sensed that that volunteers are there to help, and co-operated by not moving at all while volunteers were breaking the block. When the hole became big enough, the team gave it a breather and cat jumped out & ran away with a big sigh of relief!

Prayas Control Room Got the call of a Goat which was injured & smelling foul. When our Volunteer reached the spot they got shocked to see the condition of goat. Half of it’s mouth was eaten by maggots & teethes were sneaking out. As wound was open maggots started growing & they ate up half mouth of this creature
It was brought to hospital where medicine was poured on the wound which forced maggots to come out. As all maggots are taken out of it’s mouth the goat is quite relaxed & eating well.

On the occasion of Children’s Day on 14th November 2011, Fountainhead Schools, Surat had organised an event called STREET SMART, for the first time in the history of Surat. This is the event where one block of city’s main road is dedicated to children for doing various kind of activities which can be attended and participated by all and every. The event’s foot-fall crossed into thousands of kids and parents in the hours of the event of 5 pm to 8 pm.

PRAYAS team was invited by the organizer and we performed PUPPET SHOW on environment and wildlife conservation theme. It was enjoyed by the audience with much interest. Thanks to the Fountainhead Schools for organizing such an interesting event for the first time in Surat’s history and also for inviting us in the same.

The rescue team of PRAYAS wildlife rescue received a call from a animal lover that in a town far from Surat and near from forest area, he had spotted two villagers carrying Deer babies for selling off. When he tried to question them, they sensed danger and ran away leaving behind the babies.

The babies were Four Horned Antelope (Chosinga) babies and were in need of medical attention so they were brought to Nandini Veternary Hospital and were treated for temperature that they were running, and were cleaned by the team members as they found teaks on them. They also drank a lot of milk happily. As a protocol goat milk was fed to them which is suitable for such babies.

The forest department was also given the information about the same immediately and the officers were handed over after treatment at Nandini Hospital. They were taken to the shelter of Forest Department.

Control room of Prayas Team got the call on 10/11/2011 afternoon that cow is having a problem & is not able to stand up. It is in this condition from last 3 days & no one is coming to see this poor creature. Our control room informed the volunteers about the situation of the cow.

Our volunteer went there with ambulance & saw the cow in small ditch the locals near by it had gave her some food to eat. Volunteers noted that it was weak, dehydrated & having temperature. As it was in ditch we had to lift it up from there so we asked help of the locals who readily participated in this rescue work.They lifted the cow gently with the help of ropes & placed it in ambulance safely.

Without wasting any time the cow was brought to Nandini Veterinary Hospital. As our Control room had already informed the Doctors of Hospital to get ready for the arrival of the cow when it reached the Hospital it was taken to cows ward & it’s treatment started immediately.The doctors Gave medicine & also started Pines so that it gets re-hydrated fast.

Report came today that the cow had shown some sings of recovery.

Bridled Tern rescued – The bird appeared in Surat, and after rescue the team PRAYAS found a ring in its leg, which said:” hey guys, i am flying all the way from RIYADH, and just here to spend some time, where is a cool wetland to take some rest..!??” – and we showed him the same after having hosted him in our shelter and offering some refreshments..! – Intercontinental Migratory visitor, the first ever sighting of this bird in this part of the country.

Day 1:

Time of actual rescue from the spot: 6.15 AM
Time brought to the shore: 7.15 AM

Time taken to carry the turtle from the spot it’s found till the shore in one feet deep muddy flats – distance 1.5 Km – . It was put on a wooden board and then the board was dragged by sliding on the mud flat to have minimum lifting of the turtle. Then it was shifter in PRAYAS Animal Rescue Vehical to Nandni hospital.

First observations:

• The dehydration state of the turtle can be gauged by the swelling (accumulation of water in sub – cut between the bodywall and the skin) regions of throat. The swelling was not noted at the time of admission for the Treatment.
• Activity level was low.
• No discharge of mucuos from mouth indicating not major deterioration in terms of dehydration.
• The turtle was immediately covered (from the time of RESCUING from the SPOT in the sea) with wet gunny bags just to keep nasal area open and preventing possible direct contact with eyes.
• The total time taken from the sopt to the veternary fecility was 2 hours 45 minutes.

Veterinary Aid Details:

Veterinarian: Dr. Prahlad Chaudhary
Facility: Nandini Veterinary Hospital – Ghod Dod Road, Surat

Line of Treatment:

• Preliminary Cleaning with disinfectant & sterilized water.
• Operation under local anesthesia: removal of necrosis.
• Removal of flipper by cutting off from the 2.5 inches of skin plus septic mass.
• Cleaning of all possible infection / necrosis from the body wall – sub cut.
• Scrapping of the necrosis from the shoulder bone.
• Sterilization of operated area.
• Administration of Antibiotics and pain killers.

Medicines involved: Meloxicam, Ampoxin, Pheniramine Maleate

Stabilisation:

Turtle was then cleaned off and put in a specially prepared Marine salt water bath with water only 2 inches deep sufficient to wet total lower body but the sutured portion of the right front flipper was not touching the water.

There was some fluid discharge from the wound initially and then the discharge stopped.

The turtle then was isolated to not to be disturbed so as to impart minimum stress so that it helps sutures to settle.

Day 2:

In the morning the turtle was found to be in a better condition as gauged from the remaining front flipper action and intensity when we changed the water.

Follow up medication:

Antibiotic: AMPOXIN (INJ) 110 MG Intra muscular: rear left flipper thigh muscle
Pain Killer: Nimesulide Tab: 12.5 Mg with water

This is being written just after the above procedures: Feeding to be started at 4.00 pm – (24 hours after the surgery).

Day 3:

The Olive took feeding with a low note. Antibiotic Ampoxin Injection 110. mg dose instramusculer – administered by Darshan at 2.00 pm.

Painkillers given orally: Nimesulide Tab 12.5 mg

The activity level was okay – Observation every 2 hours.

Day 4:

Hurrah..!!: Olive’s eating well – Showing better energy than yesterday

Marine Water Changed in the morning today. Pain Killer given orally.
Antibiotic Ampoxin 110 Mg administered IM – Darshan.

• The operation wound is showing firming of skin.
• No fluid discharge.
• MOST IMPORTANT: NO swelling around neck or lumping of throat is observed. This shows good body fluids.
• When we changed the water, the Olive drank some water and made some energetic gestures by creating water bubbles (Like he is saying: “Hey Chaps..I am okay..!”).
• The remaining front flipper showing good energy but still weak and far away from normal.

Common boy…! You can do it..!

Can anyone suggest a name…? We want to name it tomorrow. Our previous one was a baby Olive who had lost its way to us and we had named it OLIVER. And it traveled back..!! Well, this one is here for a while, for me he is …
